Here is the uncomfortable part of looking for a roommate online. The profile you are messaging could be anyone. The photos could be from a modeling site. The name could be made up. And you are about to invite this person into the place where you sleep.
That is the gap ID verification closes. Not politeness, not vibes, not a blue checkmark someone paid for. An actual government issued ID, checked against an actual face.
What actually happens when someone verifies
A lot of sites say "verified" and mean the person clicked a link in an email. That is not the same thing. On Cohabital, ID verification means all of this happened:
- They photographed a real government issued ID, either a driver's license or a passport
- The barcode on the back of the license, or the machine readable strip on a passport, was decoded and cross checked against what is printed on the front. Fake IDs usually fail here because the barcode is the hard part to forge
- The expiration date and the dates on the document were validated
- They took a live face check, not an uploaded selfie. It confirms a real person is physically present, so a photo of a photo does not pass
- That live face was matched biometrically against the photo on the ID
If any of that fails, no badge. There is no manual override where being nice gets you through.
What it does not do
This part matters and most companies skip it.
ID verification proves someone is a real person who is who they say they are. It does not prove they pay rent on time, keep the kitchen clean, or are pleasant to live with. It is not a background check and it is not a credit check. A verified person can still be a bad roommate.
What it removes is the entire category of scams that depend on anonymity. The fake landlord collecting deposits on a place they do not own. The person using stolen photos. The account that disappears the second the money lands. Those all need to be nobody, and verification makes you somebody.
How to search for verified people only
It is one toggle. On the search page, hit the 🛡️ ID verified filter and every result from then on is someone who cleared the checks above. It works the same way whether you are browsing rooms or browsing roommates.
There are two more filters next to it that are worth understanding:
- 📱 Phone verified. They confirmed a real phone number by SMS code. Weaker than ID, but it filters out throwaway accounts and takes real effort to fake at scale
- 🎓 Verified students. They confirmed enrollment, either automatically with a .edu email or by uploading a student ID we review manually
You will see three small badges on every profile: Email, Phone, and ID. Think of them as a stack. Email alone means very little. All three means someone has put real effort into proving they exist.
What if the person you like is not verified
Do not just write them off, because plenty of great roommates simply have not gotten around to it. Ask them.
There is a Request ID verification button on any unverified profile and on any listing from an unverified host. Tap it and we email them saying you would like to connect but want to see the badge first. It does not share your phone number or email, just your name and profile.
Then, the moment they finish verifying, we notify you. You do not have to keep checking back. If they never do it, that is information too.
Why you should verify yourself
Selfish reason: verified members get more replies. If you are the one messaging strangers about a room, the badge is the difference between looking like a real person and looking like every scam account they have already ignored this week.
Verified profiles also rank higher in search and show up first in match results. And you can be found by people using the verified only filter, which is a growing chunk of everyone searching. If you are not verified, you are invisible to them.

What happens to your ID photos
Fair question, and you should ask it of any site that wants your license.
Your ID images are processed on our own server, not shipped off to a third party data broker. They are never shown to other members. Nobody browsing your profile sees your license, your address, your date of birth, or your legal name. All anyone sees is the badge.
We also run data retention cleanup on a schedule, so verification images do not sit around forever.
Verification is a filter, not a force field
Please still do the normal things. Tour the place in person or send someone you trust. Get the lease in writing with a real name on it. Never send a deposit before you have stood in the room. Verification massively narrows who you are dealing with, but it does not replace basic caution, and anyone telling you otherwise is selling something.

Start with verified
Flip the ID verified filter on and see what your search looks like when everyone in it is confirmed real. It is a smaller list. That is the point.
