Cohabital (“Cohabital,” “we,” “us,” or “our”) operates the website at cohabital.com and related services (together, the “Service”), a platform that helps people find roommates and shared housing. This Privacy Policy explains what information we collect, how we use and share it, and the choices you have. By creating an account or using the Service, you agree to this Privacy Policy.
1. Who can use the Service
The Service is intended for people who are at least 18 years old and located in the United States. If you are under 18, please do not use the Service or provide us any information.
2. Information we collect
Information you provide
- Account information: your first and last name, email address, password, and (if you verify it) mobile phone number.
- Profile information: profile photo, headline, bio, budget range, desired move-in date and term, general location (such as city and neighborhood), and lifestyle details you choose to share (for example cleanliness, schedule, pets, smoking, guests) and roommate preferences.
- Listings: if you post a room or shared-housing listing, the details you include such as description, rent, deposit, neighborhood, photos, amenities, and house rules.
- Communications: messages you send to other members through the Service, and any messages or requests you send to our support team.
- Team-up groups: information you provide when creating or joining a group.
- Identity verification (optional): if you choose to verify your identity, our verification process collects an image of your government-issued ID and a live selfie in order to confirm that the ID is real and belongs to you. See Section 3.
- Payment information (if applicable): the Service is currently free. If we introduce paid features in the future and you make a purchase, your payment will be handled by a third-party payment processor; we would receive limited transaction details (such as confirmation and the last digits of a card) but would not store your full payment card number.
Information collected automatically
- Usage information, such as pages viewed, features used, and actions taken.
- Device and connection information, such as browser type, device type, and IP address.
- Approximate location derived from your IP address.
- Information stored through essential cookies (see Section 7).
Information from third parties
We may receive limited information from providers that help us confirm identities, verify phone numbers, deliver email, and prevent fraud and abuse.
3. Identity, phone, and email verification
Verifying your email, phone, and identity is optional and designed to build trust between members. If you choose to verify your identity, our verification process reviews a government-issued ID and a live selfie to confirm it is really you. We store only the result of that check and the basic identity details (such as legal name and date of birth) needed to operate the verified badge and support trust and safety. We do not publish your ID document or verification images on your public profile. Your ID images and any sensitive documents are handled by our verification process and are not shown to other members.
4. How we use your information
- To operate and provide the Service, including profiles, search, compatibility matching, listings, groups, and messaging.
- To verify your email, phone, and (if you choose) identity, and to display trust badges.
- To personalize your matches and search results.
- To communicate with you, including verification messages, security and account notices, and — if you opt in — new-message and saved-search alerts.
- To promote safety, detect and prevent fraud, enforce our Terms, and comply with the law.
- To maintain, improve, and develop the Service.
5. How we share your information
With other members
Certain profile information is visible to other signed-in members, including your display name (shown as your first name and last initial), profile photo, headline, bio, general location, budget range, lifestyle details, and verification badges. Your email address, phone number, and other private contact details are not shown to other members. If you choose to make a listing “public,” that listing may be visible to anyone, including people who are not members and search engines.
With service providers
We share information with vendors who perform services on our behalf, such as hosting, email delivery, SMS delivery, identity verification, mapping and geocoding, and fraud prevention. These providers may use your information only to provide services to us.
For legal and safety reasons
We may disclose information if we believe it is reasonably necessary to comply with a law, regulation, legal process, or governmental request; to enforce our Terms; or to protect the rights, property, or safety of Cohabital, our members, or others.
Business transfers
If we are involved in a merger, acquisition, financing, or sale of assets, your information may be transferred as part of that transaction.
We do not sell your personal information.
6. Messaging and contact information
Our in-app messaging is designed to keep your personal contact information private until you decide to share it. Please be thoughtful about the information you share with other members, and do not share sensitive information you would not want others to have.
7. Cookies
We use essential cookies that are necessary to sign you in and keep you signed in. We do not use third-party advertising cookies. Most browsers let you control cookies through their settings; if you disable essential cookies, parts of the Service may not work.
8. Data retention
We keep your information for as long as your account is active or as needed to provide the Service. You may delete your account at any time (see Section 9). We may retain certain information as required for legal, security, fraud-prevention, or record-keeping purposes.
9. Your choices and rights
- Access and update: you can view and edit most of your information in your profile settings.
- Email preferences: you can turn off non-essential emails in your profile settings or via the link in those emails. We may still send you important account and security messages.
- Delete your account: you can request deletion of your account and associated data by contacting us at the address below. Deleting your account removes your profile, listings, messages, and related data.
- Regional rights: depending on where you live (for example, California or other jurisdictions), you may have rights to access, correct, delete, or receive a copy of your personal information, and to object to or restrict certain uses. To exercise these rights, contact us at privacy@cohabital.com. We will not discriminate against you for exercising your rights.
10. Security
We use reasonable administrative, technical, and physical safeguards to protect your information — for example, encrypting traffic over HTTPS and storing passwords in hashed form. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.
11. Children’s privacy
The Service is not directed to anyone under 18, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 18. If you believe a minor has provided us information, please contact us and we will delete it.
12. Third-party links
The Service may link to third-party websites or services we do not control. This Privacy Policy does not apply to those third parties, and we encourage you to review their privacy practices.
13. Changes to this Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we do, we will revise the “Last updated” date above and, where appropriate, provide additional notice. Your continued use of the Service after changes take effect means you accept the updated Policy.
